Using Prayer Beads as a tool of meditation is as old as human history. A simple device it make it easier for believers to pray in a focused and consistent manner. Malas has profound physical, metaphysical and psychological effects on the practitioner.

Meditation has always been recognized as being 'difficult', even for devout meditation practitioners of ancient India. Mala, or Japa, beads were created so that a practitioner could focus on the meaning of a mantra while they were repeating it, rather than keeping track of how many times the mantra was repeated.

Prayer beads are a form of beadwork used to count the repetitions of prayers, chants, or mantras by members of various religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Umbanda, Islam, Sikhism, the Baháʼí Faith, and some Christian denominations, such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Oriental Orthodox.

Meditation Malas are used for meditation practice to count breaths or mantra repetitions. Neck malas have 108 beads and a 'head bead' to indicate the end and beginning of each 108-bead count. The number of beads signifies the 108 worldly sins in the Buddhist tradition or as a multiple of '9' in the Hindu tradition. This number is also significant in many other religions. Each type of bead has its own significance.
