The word copal is derived from the Nahuatl language word Copalli, meaning "incense". Copal is a name given to tree resin, particularly the aromatic resins from the copal tree. Copal is the sap from a tree from Mexico.

The most common source tree is Protium copal, a member of the Bursera family named for its resin that includes close relative Bursera microphylla, a native of Baja California.

Copal is considered the “blood” of the tree and is believed to appease the Gods when burned as a sacred offering. Copal has a powerful crisp, clearing, sharp scent that purifies the energy in your space and in your energetic field.
