Kyanite whose name derives from the Greek kyanos meaning blue is a blue silicate mineral. As well s being a collectors mineral Kyanite is used primarily in refractory and ceramic products including porcelain plumbing fixtures and dinnerware.
Kyanite is typically a blue aluminosilicate mineral, usually found in alumininum-rich metamorphic pegmatites and/or sedimentary rock. Kyanite in metamorphic rocks generally indicates pressures higher than four kilobars. It is commonly found in quartz.
