Wicca was first given a name in Gerald Gardner's 1954 book Witchcraft Today, in which he announced it as “wica,” the extra “c” being added in the 1960s. According to Gardner, the word was derived from Scots-English and meant “wise people.” Although pronounced differently, the term Wicca is a modern derivation of the Old English word ƿiċċa, which referred to sorcerers in Anglo-Saxon England and has yielded the modern English word witch.

Rituals usually include a combination of meditation, invocations, movement, music, and prayer. Wiccans honor the elements of nature - earth, air, fire, water, and spirit and their associated directions of north, east, south, west, and center. It is recommended that congregant ceremonies be held outdoors.
