Galena is the natural mineral form of lead sulphide. It is the most important lead ore mineral. Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulphide minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system often showing octahedral forms. It is often associated with the minerals sphalerite calcite and fluorite.

This mineral was first described back in 77 A.D. by Gaius Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Elder). He named it after the Latin word meaning “lead ore” due to it having been used as a source of lead for multiple different societies.

The source of this mineral in ancient times was the island of Sardinia, Italy, although today notable localities stretch across the globe. Some countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States are producing the finest Galena specimens to date.
